Steve Evans hailed a “brilliant” performance from his resurgent Rotherham side and said Charlton “got out of jail” by only losing 4-2.

The Millers remain unbeaten in 2025 and after a shaky start back in League One are now pushing up the table.

They took control through early efforts from Andre Green and Alex MacDonald and led 3-1 at the break after Zak Jules struck soon after Miles Leaburn had pulled a goal back for the visitors.

Mallik Wilks added a fourth goal in the 53rd minute and Rotherham could have increased their lead further before Charlton netted a late consolation through Matty Godden’s clinical finish.

Rotherham boss Evans said: “The boys were really good. The back four will be disappointed we conceded a couple of goals.

“It was a brilliant performance.

“Their goals make it look like a tighter game than it really is. A two-goal deficit is them getting out of jail because it should have been damage limitation.

“They scored (through Leaburn) because we make a mistake but we got back on the front foot.

“The supporters have enjoyed a really good day. The boys implemented the plan.

“If you get the performances right, the results will come and that is what is showing now.

“We are just trying to make little gains. We will continue to work. We understand we have a lot of work to do. There is a lot of making up to do after a poor start.”

Charlton manager Nathan Jones had few complaints about the result after seeing his side concede what he described as “catastrophic” goals.

He said: “I thought we were really poor and didn’t do any of the basics right.

“You know when you come here what type of game you’re going to have and they were more aggressive than us.

“The goals are catastrophic and there are big, big errors in terms of a lot of things but they have had other chances as well. We didn’t defend the box.

“We get back in the game, on the stroke of half-time, and then we immediately went to today’s default and give the ball away, give a foul away, don’t defend the box and then they score.

“We weren’t us. When we’ve lost games it’s been by the odd goal and we’ve been really aggressive and front footed.”
