Andy Woodman praised his Bromley side’s defensive solidity as they made it back-to-back wins with a 1-0 League Two victory over Fleetwood.
A single second-half goal from Michael Cheek – his 15th of the season – was all Bromley needed to leapfrog Fleetwood to sit 11th in the table.
Bromley manager Andy Woodman said: “I wanted to make sure we were defensively solid and played this game with a bit of an away-game mentality when we haven’t got the ball.
“I felt we did that well. We then got the goal which gave us a real foothold in the match.”
He added: “Of course we expected them to then throw the kitchen sink at us late on and we are grateful to Grant Smith for some great saves.
“At the other end Cheek did what he does, once he nipped in to steal the ball you bet your house that Cheeky will score.
“We’ve seen the club tear down the East Stand as we go to a new phase and I am presuming it will be called the Michael Cheek stand. Everything he has done and continues to do for this football club is fantastic.”
The game got off to a quick start when Danny Imray struck Jay Lynch’s left-hand post inside the opening 10 minutes.
For Fleetwood, Rhys Bennett headed a corner narrowly wide from a corner as both sides probed for an opener.
The second half saw Bromley get out of the traps quickest, taking the lead within 30 seconds of the restart.
Cheek took advantage of defensive dithering to slide a low effort beyond Lynch.
With the Cod Army having to chase the game, Phoenix Patterson’s curling effort from 22 yards produced a brilliant fingertip save from Grant Smith.
Smith went one better with a miraculous save deep into time added on, with Louis Marsh’s point-blank header clawed off the goalline as the goalkeeper looked seemingly beaten.
Fleetwood manager Pete Wild was frank in his assessment of proceedings.
He said: “We got in good areas today and created some good chances in the second half particularly that on another day should have been taken. But ultimately it was a mistake that cost us the game.
“It wasn’t a tactical defeat today. It was a clear case of a mistake one end and that ultimately decided the game. We didn’t pass the ball quick enough nor did we move it quick enough.
“We didn’t have the requisite tempo throughout the game to hurt Bromley in the right areas. Once we did find the right tempo we created the right chances but it just wasn’t enough on the day.
“Some honest words were spoken by the players in the dressing room which is good to see but now it’s about seeing the right reaction in the next game.”
