National League North side Brackley edged out Braintree in a penalty shoot-out to book their place in the second round of the FA Cup after the game had finished 0-0 at the end of extra-time.

Brackley had started brightly, with Morgan Roberts dragging his shot wide and then substitute Kade Craig, who had not long replaced injured captain Gareth Dean, firing over in the 27th minute.

National League outfit Braintree improved following the restart, forcing Town keeper Jonny Maxted into a couple of reflex saves.

Roberts was denied by Lucas Covolan during the closing stages of normal time, and then saw his shot hit the post early in the first period of extra-time.

With neither side able to find a winner, the tie went to a penalty shoot-out, with Maxted saving two spot-kicks for the hosts in a dramatic conclusion, with Kyrell Lisbie then failing to convert for Braintree.
