Chesterfield assistant manager Danny Webb was delighted that his side kept their League Two play-off hopes alive with a 4-1 home victory over relegated Morecambe.

Will Grigg, Ash Palmer, Michael Olakigbe and Tom Naylor were on target for the hosts, while Jordan Slew replied for Morecambe.

He said: “We did what we needed to do. When they equalise you think, ‘oh, this will be a really frustrating afternoon’. We all had a bit of an eye on the scores on the bench, I’m not going to lie.

“So, like I said a few months ago, if we could take it to the last few games of the season and keep it exciting for the supporters, then we’ve had a right go. And it’s not just the last few, it’s the last game.

“More times than not, the lads made the right decisions today when they put the ball in the box.

“Yes, you’re playing against a team that’s been relegated, but I think you even saw when they equalised, they were not like a team that didn’t care or wasn’t playing for the manager, to be fair.

“They had a right go, obviously the best team won and it helped our goal difference as well.”

Despite the defeat, Morecambe boss Derek Adams was full of praise for his players.

He said: “I couldn’t ask for any more for the majority of the players today. It was absolutely outstanding, the way they pressed, the way they ran.

“Yes, we don’t have the quality, we understand that, but coming to a team that spend millions and millions of pounds, I get that.

“I held my hands up, they have good quality, they pass the ball well, but my players, to a man, work ever so hard. And I can’t ask for any more, this football club can’t ask for any more from these players.

“We didn’t hit the right pass, we made errors defensively, that’s the nature of the business.

“If you’re not giving the resources to go out and get the players, then that’s a problem for us. But these players have given it absolutely everything all season and that’s why our supporters stood in the corner and clapped them off to a man.

“And I want to tell you as well, Chesterfield Football Club and their supporters were absolutely magnificent. They understand where we are as a football club because they’ve been there as a football club and that’s testimony to people at English football to understand.

“I feel for a lot of people inside this football club as well because we’re having to pay a price for someone else’s errors.

“Until there’s a plan from up there, I can’t have a plan. They’re the ones that need to start having a plan and until they get a plan, then we’ve got a problem.”
