Doncaster missed the chance to move into the League Two automatic-promotion spots after drawing 1-1 at play-off chasing Salford.

Rob Street’s goal for Rovers was soon cancelled out by Luke Garbutt to leave Doncaster level with third-placed Walsall, with Salford four points off the play-off spots.

On the back of a six-game unbeaten run, Doncaster began the match brightly and had a goal ruled out after 16 minutes when Street’s header was chalked off for a foul.

But Karl Robinson’s side failed to heed the early warning signs and fell behind five minutes later when Street latched onto a clever Owen Bailey free-kick to rifle the ball into the top corner.

However, Salford fought their way back into the contest and drew level after 27 minutes when Garbutt curled a free-kick past Teddy Sharman-Lowe.

Deep into first-half added time, the home side also had a goal ruled out when Sharman-Lowe was adjudged to have been impeded before Ossama Ashley headed home.

Playing against his former team, Salford forward Hakeeb Adelakun rattled the woodwork midway through an action-packed second period.

Jordan Gibson squandered a golden opportunity to give Rovers the lead when he fired Jamie Sterry’s cutback over the bar before Luke Molyneux forced goalkeeper Matthew Young into a smart diving save.

Salford finished with 10 men after a clash with Sharman-Lowe led to Curtis Tilt being shown a second yellow card.
