Barry Ferguson has warned his Rangers players even those under contract are playing for their futures.

The Ibrox side dropped two more points in a lackadaisical display away to St Mirren which saw them twice lose the lead.

Talks are under way with regards to a summer takeover of the club while a new sporting director, Kevin Thelwell, was appointed earlier this week.

Ferguson underlined none of the squad are guaranteed to still be there come the start of the new season.

The interim head coach said: “I’ve said to them, even if you’re in contract, everybody’s playing for their future. As everybody here knows, there’s going to be a lot of changes and there needs to be a lot of changes.

“I said that last week after the game in Spain (the Europa League match defeat to Athletic Bilbao). We all know these changes need to happen. These changes are starting to happen.

“You obviously know with the takeover and with Kevin coming in as sporting director. So, they’re certainly moving in the right direction.

“We’re coming to the end of the season and it’s a short period that you get off and then you’re straight back into pre-season. Then you’ve got qualifiers for Europe and before you know it, the season starts. So, there’s a big job to be done here.”

Rangers’ next match is at home to new champions Celtic and Ferguson, who will wait to see the severity of an ankle injury sustained by Robin Propper, wants his players to be as up for that one as he will be.

“Listen, it’s easy to get up for the games,” he added. “But every game you cross that white line when you’re representing this club, it should mean everything to you. We’ll have a day off and then we’ll get back to work.

“One thing is I’ll be coming in with my sleeves rolled up and ready to go, so will my staff. And the players better be too.”

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson admitted he was “humbled” by the pre-match banner of him raised by the fans in recognition of the team making the top six for a third season in a row.

Robinson said: “I was delighted there were no grey hairs in the picture! It was fantastic. It made me look a lot younger.

“I’m very humbled and honoured that the fans think that highly to do something like that for me. It’s a testament to all the staff here and the group of players we’ve had over the last three years.

“There’s probably been eight or nine of them that have been very consistent performers for me. As I say, I’m just humbled with something like that.”
