Cambridge manager Garry Monk was glad to avoid an FA Cup shock at Woking, with his team winning the first round tie 1-0.

A second half goal by James Brophy was the difference at the Laithwaite Community Stadium as the League One team saw off their spirited National League opponents.

Monk, whose team have now won four matches in all competitions, was keen to contrast his side with other FA Cup shocks this weekend after the game.

He said: “There were a couple of games last night that were exactly the same as this game, like Huddersfield, where they didn’t turn up and do the fundamentals right.

“Away from home especially you can become unstuck, so we made sure the fundamentals were there in terms of competing.

“You’ve just got to take your moment when it comes along, and Brophy got it. It’s been a long time coming for him.”

Woking should have taken the lead after 30 minutes, when Max Dyche headed wide from close range after a Jamie Andrews corner.

A Dan Nlundulu effort was disallowed for handball, while Brophy forced Will Jaaskelainen to tip over before the interval.

Woking were more lively after the interval and almost took a 63rd minute lead when an Andrews free-kick hit the post.

However, they were undone in the 73rd minutes by Brophy, who struck into the top corner after a counter-attack.

The hosts looked for an equaliser and Harry Beautyman headed into the arms of Vicente Reyes but Cambridge held their nerve to progress.

Woking manager Michael Doyle believed his side deserved an extra 30 minutes of action.

He said “It’s just a shame we didn’t take the game to extra time. At the very least I think we deserved that.

“We knew that Cambridge are a really good side, if you look at their results they’ve won three on the bounce.

“The chances we missed are fine margins, but on another note I thought Jamie Andrews today was outstanding.”
