Gary Bowyer felt Burton picked up a hard-earned point in the goalless draw at Exeter which gave a small boost to their hopes of Sky Bet League One survival.
In a game played in atrocious wet weather – there were notable puddles all over the pitch throughout the second half – neither side were able to find the net as both defences were well on top.
“It was a difficult game and there were times there when you are stood on the touchline thinking that, at any minute, this could get called off,” Bowyer said.
“I think you have to give the referee an awful amount of credit for keeping the game on.
“It is ridiculous to say at this time of year with four, five games to go we are talking of a possible postponement, but that’s where we are.
“From ur point of view, we didn’t start the game particularly well, we had a wonderful clearance from Dylan Williams and Max Crocombe made a great save as well.
“We had trouble with Exeter (in the) first half, you have to respect them in terms of their possession and how they work, but we sorted that out at half-time and we were far more aggressive second half and created our own opportunities as well.
“To come here and keep a clean sheet, you have to respect that. We had a point before the game kicked off, in the first half we were second-best, but to have the reaction we did second half, I am really pleased and now, we move on to Birmingham.”
Exeter manager Gary Caldwell – not for the first time this season – felt his side lacked that killer touch as they were forced to settle for the draw.
“I thought we were excellent in the game and we were the only team trying to win the game from the start,” Caldwell said.
“We dominated the game, we controlled the middle of the pitch and I thought Kev McDonald was the conductor of that.
“We had overloads in there, the rotations of the two sixes and some of our play in that opening 20 minutes was outstanding, but you have to score in that period and that is the lesson we have to learn.
“We needed a bit more quality and a bit more ruthlessness in that final third and if we had gone ahead in that game, they would have had to come out, but we didn’t get that goal.
“I thought the players kept going and when we brought our wingers on to attack down the wing, we couldn’t actually do that because the pitch was gone, it was so wet down both sides.
“We tried to adapt and needed to get the ball in earlier, rather than create one-v-ones like we were hoping to do, but we gave it everything.”
