Lee Angol’s first-half goal gave second-bottom Morecambe a vital 1-0 win over promotion-chasing AFC Wimbledon.

Angol volleyed home from close range after 20 minutes to move the Shrimps one point from safety and condemn Wimbledon to a second successive defeat which harmed their automatic-promotion hopes.

The visitors started the game on the front foot with Alistair Smith testing Harry Burgoyne with a shot before heading a Josh Neufville cross from close range wide.

Morecambe came into it with Luke Hendrie’s cross volleyed just wide by Paul Lewis before Angol opened the scoring with a far-post volley after Yann Songo’o headed an Adam Lewis cross back into the danger area.

Wimbledon struggled to forge chances against a resolute Morecambe defence in the second period and it was the hosts who should have added to their lead in the closing stages when Gwion Edwards blazed over after working a good opening for himself.
