Lucas Akins missed a late penalty for Mansfield as they had to settle for a point from a battling 1-1 draw with Burton.

The former Albion forward was sent tumbling in the 89th minute by Jack Armer’s challenge and looked set to win it stepping up to take the spot kick himself only for his effort to fly over the bar.

Despite a strong start to the game from the visitors it was Albion who got the break to take the lead. Udoka Godwin-Malife’s cross from the right found Owen Dodgson beyond the far post and his shot was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Alfie Kilgour.

Desperate to end their 10-game winless run, Mansfield probed for an equaliser with Will Evans denied on the edge of the box by Max Crocombe before the Burton keeper made an excellent save with his foot to deny Stephen McLaughlin, the Kiwi also denying Australian midfielder Keanu Baccus, clawing away his goalbound effort.

Mansfield got a stroke of good luck early in the second half when Louis Reed’s curling cross deflected off former Stags defender Ryan Sweeney to put them back on level terms but despite strong second-half pressure could not fashion a winner with Baccus going close with a curling effort.
