Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield admitted it was a ‘strange feeling’ coming up against former manager Gareth Ainsworth as they romped to a 4-1 victory at Shrewsbury.
The Chairboys have only lost once away from home in the league all season and had a two-goal lead at half-time thanks to Beryly Lubala and Caleb Taylor.
Fred Onyedinma and former Shrewsbury striker Dan Udoh added further goals for the visitors, with Jordan Shipley responding for Salop with a sublime 30-yard free-kick.
Bloomfield said: “I am really pleased with the performance. We had to be really professional and robust in the way we went about our work.
“I played for the gaffer [Gareth Ainsworth] for many years and I knew the questions that were going to be asked of our players and the way they went about their business.
“I thought we played some good stuff and created some good chances in the top third of the pitch.
“I don’t think we were fluent but there were some mitigating factors towards that. In terms of creating chances and executing them, they were excellent.
“It was a strange feeling [coming up against Ainsworth]. I was stood on the touchline, and it was a strange feeling I will be honest, but it was important for us to just go about our business.
“I spoke to the players during the week as I believe at Exeter and Reading we played some really good football but we didn’t win those games and therefore questions started to be asked.”
Shrews boss Ainsworth was left disappointed with his side’s display.
He said: “I said to the boys at half-time the team talk would have been so much different if we didn’t concede 30 seconds before the break.
“It was terrible to do that and we have conceded at crucial times at this football club all season, not just since I came in.
“Maybe I have to look at setting this team up differently because the way I have come in and set my teams up in the past with a decent win rate doesn’t seem to be working here.
“As a manager, my strength is always getting the best out of the players, not employing a system that they have to do.
“I may need to adjust a little bit and see how we can be more solid because we are shipping way too many goals.
“We have to give ourselves chances in games and we are scoring goals, which we didn’t do before I came in.
“We are actually scoring now but we are conceding too easily.”
