Michael Appleton says Shrewsbury’s relegation was “inevitable” after their fate was sealed on Friday.
Appleton recently replaced Gareth Ainsworth in charge of the Shrews and saw them become the first EFL club to be relegated this season.
The club’s fate was sealed by a draw for Burton even before their 1-0 defeat to Wigan, where Dale Taylor’s strike separated the two sides.
“With the result before the game from the Burton game it was done,” said Appleton, who has been in charge for six games.
“I’m not going to say it had an effect on the group or the team. If it did it was not something I was aware of. I think there was an inevitability anyway.
“I don’t know if the players were aware (of Burton’s result). I didn’t relay it to them and I’m pretty sure the rest of the staff wouldn’t have either.
“That would be one big excuse to use in terms of how we went about the first half. You could argue they did know with that first-half performance.
“I’m realistic. The reality is it was always going to be really difficult to stay up.
“We’ve been in every single game. I’m a big believer if we want to take the football club forward it needs an identity.
“I’m not sure the last time this football club had an identity. When people use the word Shrewsbury I want them to know how we play, what we do and how we go about it.
“Clearly we need a lot of reinforcements. A lot of players will come into the building and a lot will leave. But I’m a big believer that we will get there.”
It was Ryan Lowe’s first victory since taking over as Latics boss and he said: “I’m pleased. I’m proud.
“The crowd were amazing, they’ve been behind us since minute dot.
“It’s tough this time of the year. I feel for Shrewsbury, being relegated before the game and having nothing to play for. Our mentality had to be right and I think it was.
“I’m really pleased with the outcome. It’s a massive three points for us. First win, which I’m proud of, but I’m pleased for the players.
“I was pleased that we created chances. We’ve been working on it all week. The lads have done it and I couldn’t ask for more.
“A bit of lack of quality and decision-making, but that’s where we are. If you get those things right you’ll find yourself scoring more goals and getting more results.
“But it’s not for a lack of trying. The lads have been fantastic since I’ve come in.
“I’ve asked them to get a couple more wins now and to get our first win at home.”
