Rasmus Hojlund is confident Manchester United’s squad are learning what it takes to get Ruben Amorim’s system right on the pitch.

United travel to Newcastle on Sunday having lost just once in the past seven games in all competitions.

After battling to a goalless draw in the Manchester Derby against City last weekend, the Red Devils should have come away from the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final at Lyon on Thursday night with a lead to defend but conceded a stoppage-time equaliser following another mistake by under-fire goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Denmark forward Hojlund feels there are signs of progress as Portuguese coach Amorim – who replaced Erik ten Hag in November – looks to reshape United’s approach.

“I think we are starting (to learn) the system, you have got to learn your movements, player to player. I think that is very important,” Hojlund said in an interview on the club’s website.

“I have played in this sort of system before, where it is so important that you know each other’s movements and also the opponents’ characteristics.

“But also internally, what is it that, say Christian (Eriksen) is thinking when he is on the ball?

“That is so important to understand and also to look what are his sort of main characteristics.

“We are starting to get to know that because of training and because of games, obviously, but, yeah, you can start to see that a bit more now and I think that is why the results are improving.”

Hojlund, 22, feels Amorim is determined for everyone to be on board with what they are trying to achieve.

“He is very passionate and he wants to improve everybody,” Hojlund said.

“You can see that he has really got the heart for wanting to improve and be better.

“He wants to bring this club back where it belongs, and I think that is his main quality.

“He just wants to be better and just be the best version of him being a manager.”

Amorim expects to have the same squad at Newcastle from the trip to France.

Kobbie Mainoo made his first appearance since February when coming off the bench late on.

Midfielder Mason Mount was also a second-half substitute on Thursday night so could be in contention for a first start of the year.

Teenage striker Chido Obi is available again after being ineligible for the European tie.
