Stevenage ended a run of five games without a win with a 1-0 away victory over relegation-battling Shrewsbury in League One.

Aaron Pierre’s eighth-minute own goal settled the game and left Shrewsbury seven points adrift of safety.

The visitors took an early lead when Harvey White collected the ball on the edge of the box and his deflected effort went in off Pierre.

Shrewsbury went close to a leveller just past the 20-minute mark, George Lloyd went one-on-one with goalkeeper Murphy Cooper, but his shot rebounded off a post and John Marquis could not convert from close range.

Just before half-time, Boro’s Daniel Kemp went close from a tight angle, but it hit a post and the hosts managed to clear.

White whipped a cross into the danger area early into the second half, which Brandon Hanlan met but his headed effort went wide.

Shrewsbury pushed for an equaliser in the final 10 minutes. First Harrison Biggins hit the crossbar with a thunderous strike from just outside the area before Lloyd’s shot from distance whistled over the top of Cooper’s goal.
