Wycombe boss Mike Dodds hailed his side’s “gutsy” performance as they claimed a 1-0 victory away to Huddersfield.

Daniel Udoh fired home the game’s only goal in the 63rd minute.

The result cuts Wrexham’s advantage in second place back down to three points in the race to join Birmingham in achieving automatic promotion.

Dodds said: “It’s a really important three points, not just in terms of the league table – which I know everyone will obviously focus on, I understand that – but just for the group, really.

“They’ve been hurting the last two games, because they’ve taken one point from a possible six before this evening when we genuinely feel it should have been six and now it should be nine from nine.

“But look, it is what it is. I think that’s just rewards for the previous two performances, if anything, and that’s not to take away from tonight’s performance.

“It was a different type of performance. It wasn’t as fluid, it wasn’t as controlled in terms of possession, but this is a really good Huddersfield team, regardless of league position.

“They’ve got a huge budget for this league. You’ve just got to look at the stadium and the surroundings, it’s all geared up to be a Championship football club, so we knew it was going to be a difficult evening.

“We knew we had to set up slightly differently, but the players executed exactly what we wanted from them, and it’s just rewards for a really kind of gutsy performance.”

Huddersfield, meanwhile, have lost more ground in their efforts to climb back into the top six and are now four points adrift of Reading.

Interim head coach Jon Worthington said: “I thought that the moments didn’t go for us in the game.

“We had a chance from Ben Wiles in the first minute, and I think if that goes in, I think the game looks completely different.

“I was pleased with certain periods, especially first half. I thought we really sustained the pressure and dominated the ball.

“We got a lot of crosses in and around the box and Wycombe defended the box really well, and we probably just weren’t aggressive enough to get across them and get that final pass quite right.

“I felt the lads were on the front foot. We’re pressing high, we were, you know, dominating the ball and dominating periods.

“So it just did feel a little bit of a sucker punch when the goal came, but that’s football, and you have to deal with that and move forward. I thought we got a reaction, but not the goal.

“We’re going to keep on taking it game by game. Other teams will drop points and none of the teams around us have been on an unbelievable run.”
